Restaurant Review - Marmaris

You could easily miss this place on St Giles Street, Northampton. That is if it wasn't for the gorgeous BBQ smell coming from within making it almost impossible not to walk past.

Marmaris is a small restaurant in the heart of Northampton serving traditional Turkish food, most of which is cooked over coals in the open plan kitchen/restaurant.

I visited early evening on a Thursday, it was fairly quiet when I arrived although while I was there things really started to get busy with both the restaurant and take away. It was a bit of a chance visit, I was at a loose end and thought I would give it a go. I'm really glad I did!

I love barbecued food. The subtle smoky, charred flavour with well spiced meat or fish really is something I can't eat too often. The menu has a good selection of kebabs all made with either lamb or chicken, there are also a couple of fish options. This isn't your doner kebab on the way home from a night at the pub kind of place. This is somewhere that uses quality ingredients and handles them with great care for maximum flavour.

I chose the Mixed Shish. This is a skewer of Lamb Shish and a skewer of Chicken Shish served with steamed rice and salad. While this was cooking I was given a plate of grilled onions. These were obviously grilled long and slow as they released a really sweet flavour, they were served in a sauce that I think was made from Pomegranate (I may be wrong, if you know Turkish food leave a comment below, I would love to have it again!).  The onions had a nice kick and the sauce was so moorish I didn't want it to end. It was sweet and sharp and I mopped the lot up with the flat bread that accompanied them.

The bread was really fresh and had a lovely flavour. It was a little too well toasted for me, I would have preferred it a bit softer.

When my main meal arrived I was really pleased, a generous portion and well presented. The chicken was nicely cooked, not tough at all and well spiced. The same for the lamb, this had a bit more chilli and was delicious. Not greasy at all and beautifully charred the way you can only get by cooking over charcoal. There was an onion salad with it that was beautiful. Marinated in herbs and spices, they accompanied the meat really well. The rice it was served with was a little bland and could have done with some seasoning but with so many flavours on the plate this can be forgiven.

The price for this with a can of Coke was £11. Very good value I feel which makes it even more attractive.

Overall taking into account the friendly service, value and the quality, well cooked food Marmaris scores a very creditable 7/10. It's easy to become a regular at a place like this, I think I will be.
